The Grace of Taking Time
Discover the quiet joy of repairing with care.

What is Kintsugi?
Kintsugi began in Japan about 500 years ago. It’s not just about repairing pottery with tree sap lacquer—it’s about transforming broken pieces into art with real gold.
The lacquer comes from the urushi tree, and only about 200ml can be harvested from a single tree in its lifetime. After harvesting, the tree is cut down and must be regrown for 10–15 years. This makes urushi a rare and precious natural material.

All materials used in kintsugi are natural and safe for tableware. But proper drying requires the right temperature, humidity, and patience—it can take several days to a week or more. Touching raw urushi can cause a rash similar to poison ivy. Because of this, kintsugi was traditionally practiced only by skilled artisans.
Today, as people around the world rediscover the philosophy behind kintsugi, we’ve created a beginner-friendly kit so that anyone can experience this timeless art.

The 3 Values of Kintsugi
1. Celebrate Imperfection
Cracks become golden scars—reminders that damage, whether in objects or in ourselves, can lead to deeper beauty and meaning.
2. Mindfulness
The slow, hands-on process helps you focus, breathe, and be present.
3. Self-Efficacy
Restoring something with your own hands can help restore your spirit, too. No two finished pieces are alike.

What kind of pottery do people repair?
Not always expensive ones—often it’s a cup or plate with sentimental value.
One man saved the broken pieces of a bowl his wife accidentally dropped, and later repaired it as a surprise birthday gift.
You’ll find lots of kintsugi pieces on our Instagram too.
